Brown University Academic Calendar: Fall 2023

  • July 12 – Registration opens for Semester I 2023-24 for Online – Master of Public Health students at 9:00 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time
  • August 1- Last day for payment of charges
  • August 29- Beginning of Graduate School All-Student Orientation
  • August 31 – Beginning of College Orientation
  • September 1 until 4 – Registration of new undergraduate and all graduate students (except Online – Master of Public Health) for the fall semester begins at 4:00 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time Friday and ends at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time Monday September 4 (Maximum of 4 credit hours allowed for undergraduates)
  • September 5 – Registration re-opens at 9:00 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time on September 5 for all students for the fall semester (Up to a maximum of 5 credit hours allowed)
  • September 5 – Opening Convocation at 4:00 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time
  • September 6 – Classes of the first semester begin
  • September 6 – First day of Rhode Island School of Design Fall Session
  • September 8 – Theses and Dissertations of candidates for Masters and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in October due
  • September 13 – Last day to register for a Fall Rhode Island School of Design course without a fee or change a grade option for a Fall Rhode Island School of Design course – (5:00 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time deadline)
  • September 19 – Last day to add a course without a fee (5:00 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time deadline). Banner Web will be taken down for approximately one hour. Once relaunched, all course adds require Instructor override and will be charged a late fee of $15 per course.
  • October 1 – Deadline for undergraduates on personal leave (including employment and military leave) or on Full-time Study Away status to request return to studies at Brown for Spring
  • October 3 – Last day to add a course (includes late fee), change from audit to credit, or change a grade option declaration (5:00 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time deadline)
  • October 9 – Indigenous Peoples’ Day – No University exercises
  • October 10 – Last day to receive any partial tuition refund
  • October 17 – The date by which sophomores entering their 5th semester must file their concentration declaration forms via Academic Advising Support System to avoid having a “No Concentration” hold placed against their Banner registration (5:00 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time deadline)
  • October 20 – Last day to change from credit to audit in a course (5:00 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time deadline)
  • October 21 – Mid-semester
  • October 23 – Advising period for spring pre-registration begins – Students in their first through third semesters will need to procure their advising Personal Identification Number from their advisor in order to register
  • November 7 – Registration opens for Semester II, 2023-24 for undergraduate students semester level 07 and above and all continuing graduate students (except Online – Master of Public Health) at noon Eastern Standard Time – Registration remains open until Tuesday, November 14, 5:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time (Maximum of 4 credits allowed for undergraduates)
  • November 8 – Registration opens for Semester II, 2023-24 for undergraduate students semester levels 05-06 at noon Eastern Standard Time (Students are unable to register for 5th semester unless approved concentration is filed) – Registration remains open until Tuesday, November 14, 5:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time (Maximum of 4 credits allowed for undergraduates)
  • November 9 – Registration opens for Semester II, 2023-24 for undergraduate students semester levels 03-04 at noon Eastern Standard Time – Registration remains open until Tuesday, November 14, 5:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time (Maximum of 4 credit hours allowed for undergraduates)
  • November 10 – Deadline for submission of proposals for College Curriculum Council-approved undergraduate group study projects, independent study projects, and internships for credit for Semester II
  • November 10 – Registration opens for Semester II, 2023-24 for undergraduate students semester levels 01-02 at noon Eastern Standard Time – Registration remains open until Tuesday, November 14, 5:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time (Maximum of 4 credit hours allowed for undergraduates)
  • November 11 until Tuesday, November 14 – Registration for Semester II, 2023-24 continues until Tuesday, November 14, 5:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time
  • November 14 – Students on serious warning who wish to drop a course after this date must meet with an academic dean for advising and to obtain a “drop code”
  • November 22 – until-Sunday-November-26-Thanksgiving recess beginning Wednesday at noon Eastern Standard Time
  • November 27 – Classes resume
  • November 29 – Registration opens for Semester II 2023-24 for Online – Master of Public Health students at 9:00 a.m. Eastern Standard Time
  • December 1 – Deadline for undergraduates to request a personal leave (including employment and military leave) or to request Full-time Study Away status for Spring – Any Full-time Study Away approved by the Study Away Review Committee for which the Registrar does not receive written confirmation of the student’s plans by this date may be cancelled
  • December 2 – Midyear Completion Celebration at 4:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time in Salomon De Ciccio Family Auditorium
  • December 4 – Last day of Fall Rhode Island School of Design classes
  • December 8 – Beginning of Reading Period (optional and at the discretion of the instructor)
  • December 12 – Classes end for courses not observing the Reading Period – Last day to drop a course (5:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time deadline) or to request an incomplete from an instructor
  • December 12 – Last day to initiate a Course Performance Report via Academic Advising Support System
    December 12 – Undergraduate Certificates: Last day for students in their ante-penultimate (typically 6th) semester to declare an undergraduate certificate in Academic Advising Support System
  • December 12 – Undergraduate Concentrations: Last day for students to declare second or third concentrations in Academic Advising Support System for students in their penultimate semester (typically the 7th semester) who are declaring a second/third concentration (5:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time deadline)
  • December 13 – Last day for approved 7th (or penultimate) semester undergraduates in eligible concentrations to submit writing completed in the concentration in Academic Advising Support System to complete part II of the writing requirement – Concentration advisors must approve submitted writing in Academic Advising Support System for the writing requirement to be fulfilled
  • December 13 until Thursday, December 21 – Final Examination Period (inclusive of Sunday)

  • April 19 until Tuesday, April 23 – Registration for Fall 2024 continues until Tuesday, April 23 5:00 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time
  • April 26 – Reading Period begins and will end on May 7 (optional and at the discretion of the instructor)
