Cardozo Academic Calendar – The Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law, founded in 1976, provides standard and innovative legal education to a diversified student body. Located steps away from the NYC legal district, Cardozo offers students unparalleled access to one of the country’s most dynamic and lucrative law communities.

Cardozo’s academic calendar operates on a semester system, with optional summer courses offered in intensive sessions. The fall and spring semesters run from August through December and January through May, respectively. A single winter session is offered spanning two weeks in early January.

This calendar overview will provide Cardozo students, faculty, and staff with clearly defined expectations for required academic events over the 2023-2024 year. Key dates listed for each academic session include university holidays, limited class schedules, and registration deadlines, drop requests, withdrawals, and degree completions. Summer 2023 – 1L

  • Wed., May 17 – 1L orientation and Elements of Law class begins
  • Tues. May 23 – Last day for May entry 1L students to drop summer classes with a full tuition refund
  • Thurs., May 25 – Shavuot – Classes end at 4PM
  • Fri., May 26 – Shavuot – University closed; no classes; building closed
  • Mon., May 29 – Memorial Day—University closed; no classes; building closed
  • Tues., July 4 – Independence Day – University closed; no classes; building closed

Summer 2023 – Upper Level (May 15-August 25)

  • Mon., May 15 – Upper-level summer session begins
  • Wed., May 31 – Last day to drop a summer course online with a full tuition refund. Students can submit an add/drop form to the Registrar’s Office to add or drop a summer class after this date. Students can add/drop summer courses without penalty until the day before each summer class begins.
  • Thurs., June 1 – Last morning to add a summer course online. See note above for additional information.
  • Dates Vary – Last day to drop a summer course without a “W”. Students can drop without a “W” until the day before each summer class begins. After June 1st, please submit an add/drop form to the Registrar’s Office.
  • Thurs., May 25 – Shavuot – Classes end at 4PM
  • Fri., May 26 – Shavuot – University closed; no classes; building closed
  • Mon., May 29 – Memorial Day – University closed; no classes; building closed
  • Tues., July 4 – Independence Day—University closed; no classes; building closed

Fall Semester 2023 August 25 – December 15, 2023

  • Wed., August 16 – LLM Orientation begins
  • Wed., August 16 – 1L Orientation and Elements of Law class begins
  • Fri., August 25 – First day of 1L classes
  • Mon., August 28 – First day of upper level classes
  • Thurs., August 31 – Last day for August entry 1L students to withdraw from the program with full tuition refund
  • Mon. September 4 – Labor Day – University closed; no classes; building closed. Last day for LL.M and continuing JD students to drop fall classes with a full tuition refund (for students withdrawing from the program or registered for less than full-time)
  • Tues., September 5 – Last day for LL.M and continuing JD students to add fall classes
  • Sun., September 10 – Last day to drop courses without a “W” being recorded on the student’s transcript
  • Fri., September 15Sun., September 17 – Rosh Hashanah – Friday classes end at 4PM. no Sunday classes.
  • Mon., September 25 – Yom Kippur – University closed; no classes; building closed
  • Tues., September 26 – Monday schedule

  • Fri., September 29 – Last day to apply for a January 2024 degree (all programs). Last day for LLM January 2024 degree candidates to submit a concentration application
