Ibukun Abiodun Awosika Biography, Net worth, and Investments…Bilkisu Abiodun Motunrayo Omobolanle Adekola also known as Ibukun Abiodun Awosika was born on the 24th of December 1962. She is a Nigerian business woman, TV host, motivational speaker, and author. She is currently the chairman of First Bank of Nigeria. She is also known simply as Blessing.

Early Life

Ibukun was born in Oyo state capital, Ibadan, Nigeria. She is the third child out of seven children born to Mr. Abdulmashood Adekola, her father and Hannah Aduke Adekola, her mother who is a Cameroonian.

Educational background

Ibukun had her primary and secondary education at the prestigious St. Paul’s African Church Primary School, Lagos state before proceeding to Methodist Girls’ High School, Yaba.

She had her University education at the prestigious Obafemi Awolowo University which was then known as University of Ile-Ife where she studied chemistry. She eventually graduated with a B.sc in Chemistry.

Ibukun Awosika also holds a post graduate and MBA certificate after completing various business courses at the Lagos state Business school and at IESE Business School.

Personal Life

Ibukun Awosika is happily married to Abiodun Awosika, the Chief Executive Officer of Excel Exploration & Production Company Limited. The marriage is blessed with three children: Oludola, Olafusika, and Olamposi.

Business career

Ibukun has been a lover of architecture hence she started her business career while on National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) assignment as a trainee at Akintola Williams & Co. which is now known as now Deloitte. She later joined Alibert Nigeria Ltd. where she worked as the showroom manager.  She didn’t love the idea of working under people. So, she left and started her own furniture making company in 1989 which she called Quebees Limited. Not long after that, the business metamorphosed into The Chair Centre Limited before evolving to SOKOA Chair Centre Limited.  The change of name came in 2004 due to a business merging with SOKOA S.A and Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB).

Ibukun Abiodun Awosika is currently a fellow of the African Leadership Initiative and Aspen Global Leadership Network. She is also currently a member of Nigerian Economic Summit Group, and also a member of Nigerian Sovereign Wealth Fund. She was the former chairperson of the Women in Management, Business and Public Service Board of Trustees.

Following the resignation of Prince Ajibola Afonja, Ibukun became the first woman to be appointed as the Chairman, First Bank of Nigeria. She is also a lawyer.

Career: Television

Ibukun hosts a programme on television called ‘Business His way’. She was also a part of the entrepreneurs to appear in Africa’s version of the ‘Dragons Den’ in 2008.

Ibukun co-established an organization which tackles the high rate of youth unemployment in the country called’ Afterschool Graduate Development Centre’. She also co-founded a platform that empowers women called Women in Management, Business and Public Services (WIMBIZ).

  1. In 2005, she was nominated for the Entrepreneur of The Year award at the THISDAY Newspaper Annual Merit Award.
  2. In 2006, she was nominated for the Female Entrepreneur of the Year prize at the Success Digests Magazine’s Annual Enterprise Award.
  3. In 2006, she was nominated for the Best Female Entrepreneur of The Year prize at the Financial Standard and Pan-African Organization for Women Recognition.
  4. She won the FATE Model Entrepreneur Award of the Year at the FATE Foundation Awards.
  5. She won the Golden Heart Award at the International Women Society Award in 2007.
  6. She won the Entrepreneurial Challenge Award in 2008.
  7. She was nominated for the YNaija Person of The Year in 2015

When asked about how she was able to survive in the furniture business she said:

“I can guarantee that you won’t last long in business if you cut corners. When I started the furniture business, I had people who started about the same time as I did. There are people in the furniture industry I call government children; once their people go out of power, their businesses cease to exist. I am content with the little I make because I made it the right way and sometimes you need to fight for survival,”

Ibukun Advising business owners said:

“You must understand that you are not indispensable to your business because you are not God. You are not the most important person in your business, the guys who work for you are just as important as well. You must learn to respect them and the value they bring into your business. You can’t pay them peanuts and pay yourself all the money.”
