Early years

Ikechuwku Uche was born on 5th of January 1984 in Aba, Abia state. He is the younger brother of Kalu Uche, also a professional Nigerian footballer. Ikechuwku Uche’s is said to have begun his football career right from his backyard with Amanze United before he moved to Iwuanyawu Nationale in the year 2000, both being local county clubs. After a season, like most footballers in the world, he set his sight on playing in Europe and in 2002, he moved to Racing de Ferrol in the Spanish Second Division. Uche played 28 games for Racing in two seasons and he scored 2 goals. Racing was relegated in Uche’s second season at the club.

Ikechuwku Uche then signed for another club in Spanish Second Division, Recreativo de Huelva and he scored 12 goals for the club in his debut season. During the 2005-2006 season, Uche won the Pinchi Trophy for the highest goal scorer in the league with 20 goals in 28 appearances. This also saw the return of Recreativo to the top tier of Spanish football by winning the second division after being relegated three seasons earlier.

Moving up the ladder

In his first season in La Liga, Ikechuwku Uche scored 8 goals for Recreativo and cementing a top half of the table finish in the first season back in La Liga.  Uche joined fellow La Liga team, Getafe for the 2007/2008 season, he played 55 times for the club in his two seasons at the club; albeit sparingly as a substitute and he scored 11 goals for the club.,

In July 2009, La Liga new boys Real Zaragoza agreed to sign Uche subject to passing medical, Uche signed a four years contract with Zaragoza. However his time with the club was hindered by re-occurring injuries. He initially suffered a 7months injury in his first season in his early days at the club. He recovered fully before the beginning of a new season and yet again injury struck again and he was out for another 6 months. In total, he made 18 appearances for Real Zaragoza and he scored his first and only goal for the club on the 2nd of March 2011.

On the last day of the summer transfer window popularly known as deadline day, Villarreal that had just been relegated signed Uche and he was immediately loaned out to Granada. In his first for Granada, he scored the only goal of the match against Villarreal.  Uche subsequently returned to Villarreal after that season and he led his club to promotion with the highest goal for the team.  Uche scored his first hat trick as a professional footballer on the 6th of January 2014 in a La Liga match between Villarreal and Rayo Vallecano.  Uche is fondly remembered by Nigerians for his time with Villarreal.  He played 85 games for Villareal and scored 33 goals.

Later years

Following the expiration of his contract with the Yellow Submarines, Uche signed a lucrative 3 years deal with Mexican club Tigres UANL on the 20th if June 2015. Fast forward to February 2016, Uche was loaned back to Spain with Malaga, he played three matches that season.  At the beginning of the 2016-2017 season, in the Spanish second division, Uche signed a one year contract with Gimnàstic de Tarragona. After about a year, the contract got extended by another one year. He has played 61 times for Gimnastic and he has scored 16 goals.


International Career

It was not until the year 2007 that Uche made his debut for Nigeria in the Super Eagles team.  Uche was part of the Super Eagles squad at the African Cup of Nations in 2008 that reached the quarter final. He also played an important role in Nigeria’s qualification for the 2010 world Cup in South Africa. Uche scored four goals in four qualifying matches before getting injured for a long period. His importance to the team can be gleaned from the statement of the Super Eagles coach, Shuaibu Amodu ahead of Nigeria’s qualifier Match against Mozambique Amodu admitted that,

“the absence of the forward is a blow but he will change his game plan to ensure a win for the Super Eagles.”

Ikechuwku Uche was, however, a part of the Afcon winning squad of 2013.

Net worth

Ikechuwku Uche has spent most of his playing Career in Spain. Professional football players can make plenty of money. But earnings depend on plenty of different considerations. These include the player’s area and of course, their talent. Most players in Great Britain and Western Europe earn an average of 50,000 pounds per week.  As of 2018, Ikechuwku Uche is said to be worth $10 million dollars. Ikechuwku Uche earned a whopping sum of 1.8 million Euros as of 2009 playing for Zaragoza.  In 2015, Ikechuwku Uche also signed a $3.5 million dollars contract with Mexican club, Tigres UANL.
