National Open University of Nigeria: All You Need To Know

The national open university of Nigeria is a federal governed distant and open learning programming. Widely regarded as the biggest university of Nigeria, NOUN first opened its doors on 22 July 1983 as a springboard for open and distance learning in Nigeria. It was suspended by the government on 25 April 1984.

However, its resuscitation was begun on 12 April 2001 by the former President of Nigeria, Gen. Olusegun Obasanjo.

The University has its main administrative office at jabi, Abuja and has as it’s current vice-chancellor Prof. Abdallah Uba Adamu.

 

Admission process

Interested applicants who wish to purchase the National Open University of Nigeria form can get them at any of the under-listed banks.

  1. First city monument bank
  2. Zenith bank
  3. Skye bank
  4. Ecobank

Inquiries should be made at the customer care desks of each of these banks about the NOUN account number which would then be provided and the sum of 5,000 naira for undergraduate, 7’500 for masters and 10,000 for Ph.D. forms. It should be noted that when requesting for this account number, this number should be verified by the bank agents to be the correct account number of the national open university of Nigeria.

After successfully making the payment, please proceed and collect the Application pin CODE which is always equivalent to the amount paid for your form from the Bank.

You are required to visit the website of National Open University Nigeria here and click on the title which says: “Application Form”.

When the application form webpage loads up on your browser, proceed and use your Application PIN to access your own personalized NOUN online application form.

Proceed and complete the online NOUN admission application form by providing all the required data/information correctly.

This form can be edited as many times as possible before submission.

After submission, the admission form can then be printed out

Admission Requirements

For undergraduate applications the requirements are;

Five (5) credits in the SSCE/GCE O’Level/NECO/NABTEB or equivalents at not more than two (2) sittings, which you must have obtained in subjects which are relevant to the proposed field(s) of study.

Applicants should take note, that the “Teachers’ Grade II Certificate with a minimum of five merits or its combination with any of the certificates listed under (1) to obtain the equivalent of five credits at ‘O’ levels.

Also, all candidates, who are currently seeking for admission into the NOUN School of Law, that they must have up to five (5) credits, which must include the following subjects:

English Language,
Literature in English,
At least a credit Pass in Mathematics at not more than two (2) sittings.

For direct entry applications the requirements are;

A National Diploma, which should come from a recognized institution in Nigeria.

A Nigerian Certificate in Education (NCE) in the subject(s) which are very relevant to YOUR proposed program of study with a minimum of one merit and two (2) passes.

Also International Baccalaureates, Interim Joint Matriculation Board (IJMB) with at least two ‘A’ level papers in relevant subjects and prerequisites number of ‘O’ level credit passes.

For masters applications the requirements are;

You are required to have a first degree from a University which MUST be recognized by the Senate of NOUN in a related field of study. (Almost all National Universities Commission (NUC) approved Universities are recognized by NOUN)

You are also required to have a postgraduate diploma in a related field from a University which MUST be recognized by Management of NOUN, this would go a long way, in helping you be admitted too.

The school senate also accepts a good honors degree in Education (Arts, Languages, Sciences, Social Sciences, Vocational and Technical subjects) from any University which is recognized by NOUN.

The Senate also confirms that holders of HND (with a minimum of Upper Credit) from institutions recognized by the Senate of NOUN, in a related field of study are accepted to come for their Masters in NOUN.

Members of relevant professional bodies may apply for the Master of Business (MBA) program. Relevant professional bodies includes companies which are recognized or registered in Nigeria.

For Ph.D. applications the requirements are;

A masters degree in relevant fields of study from a University which is recognized by the Senate of the NOUN.

Take note, that you must possess this Master degree with a minimum score average of not less than 60% or a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 3.5 on a 5-point scale.

Aspiring candidates who are going for the Ph. D Programmes in The National Open University of Nigeria should take note, that they will be invited for an interactive session with the School of Postgraduate Studies before an offer of admission is made to them.

All candidates have to forward the following listed documents below:

  1. Transcripts of their academic records,
  2. Also, forward three (3) referees report, and two of these referees must be from persons very well acquainted with the candidate’s academic work.

The above-required items should be forwarded to the Dean of the School from which admission is requested.
