Norfolk State University (NSU) is a public historically black university located in Norfolk, Virginia. Some key information about Norfolk State University:

• It was founded in 1935 as the Norfolk Unit of Virginia Union University. It became independent in 1969 as Norfolk State College and gained university status in 1979.
• The university has a Division I athletic program and competes in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC). Its sports teams are known as the Spartans.
