It is one of the university centres of the State University of New York (SUNY) system. The university uses a well-structured semester calendar which comprises fall, winter, spring, and summer semesters. Stony Brook Academic Calendar:

Fall 2023

• July 1 – Classes continue in the School of Medicine for medical students in Phase II and Phase III
• August 7 – Classes begin in the School of Medicine for medical students beginning Phase 1A and School of Dental Medicine 1st year students
• August 14 – Classes begin in the School of Medicine for students in Phase 1B and in Dental Medicine for 2nd, 3rd and 4th year students
• August 28 – Classes begin in Public Health; Nutrition; the Schools of Nursing; Social Welfare; Health Professions; and West Campus. Late Registration begins, $50 fee assessed to all students who are not enrolled in at least one course before August 28, 2023
• September 1 – Last day for all students to submit major/minor or specialization changes effective for Fall 2023 and Winter 2024 term
• September 3 – Last day for all students to drop a course or withdraw from the university without tuition liability(0%). Contact your Health Sciences school/program
• September 4 – Labor Day: No classes in session. Offices Closed
• September 11 – For all students enrolled in full Fall term session code A; last day to add, swap or drop a class without a “W” being recorded. End of late registration. Tuition liability may applies. Petition to the respective HSC School or program required after this date
• October 9-10 – Fall Break: No classes in session except the School of Dental Medicine and the School of Medicine. School of Health Professions, please contact program for additional information
• October 30 – Major/Minor Changes begin. Students can begin to submit Major/Minor changes effective for Spring 2024
• November 6 – Last day for removal of Incomplete (I) grades from Spring and Summer 2023 term
• November 22-26 – Thanksgiving Break: No Classes in session. Classes resume Monday, November 27, 2023. School of Medicine break is Nov. 23 – 26, 2023
• December 1 – Last day for Fall 2023/Winter 2024 degree candidates to apply for graduation via SOLAR
• December 11 – LOA/Term Withdrawal: Last day to take a leave of absence or withdraw from the University. Undergraduate and Graduate students, last day to withdraw or take a leave of absence from the university. Withdrawing or a leave of absence from the University must be processed by the student’s Health Sciences school/program
• December 18 – Last day of classes for School of Social Welfare
• December 21 – Fall Term ends: 2:00 PM for Graduate Program in Public Health; 5:00 PM for School of Nursing; At the close of classes for programs in the Basic Sciences and the School of Health Professions
• December 23 – Winter recess begins at the close of classes For students in the School of Dental Medicine and School of Medicine students in Phase I and II. Classes resume for Phase I, II, III medical students on Tuesday, January 2, 2024. Contact your school for additional information

Winter 2024

• January 2 – 20, 2024

Spring 2024

• January 2 – Late Registration: $50 fee if not enrolled in at least one class before session start. For session code add/drop dates see the Table of Session Dates below for Spring 2024.
• January 2 – Dental Medicine classes resume. School of Medicine classes resume for medical students in Phase I, Phase II and Phase III. Basic Sciences and Health Professions modules resume.
• January 15 – Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day: No Classes in session.
• January 22 – Late Registration: $50 fee if not enrolled in at least one class before session start. For session code add/drop dates see the Table of Session Dates below for Spring 2024. Schools of Health Professions; Nursing; and Social Welfare; Graduate Program in Nutrition; Graduate Program in Public Health and West Campus semester classes begin. Dental Medicine Spring 2024 classes begin.
• January 26 – Major/Minor Changes End: Last day to submit major/minor changes effective Spring 2024 Semester
• January 27 – First Day of Saturday Classes: This includes East (Health Sciences), West and Manhattan campuses and SPD online.
• January 28 – Last day for undergraduate and graduate students to drop a course or withdraw from the University without incurring tuition liability. Withdrawing from the University must be processed through your Health Sciences school/program.
• February 2 – For all students enrolled in full Spring term session code B; Last day to add, swap or drop a class without a “W” being recorded. End of late registration. Petition to the respective HSC School required after this date.
• March 11-17 – Spring Break: Classes resume Monday, March 18th. Students in the School of Medicine and School of Dental Medicine should contact their individual school for information about Spring Break dates.
• March 25 – Major/Minor ChangesBegin: Undergraduate Students can begin to submit major/minor changes effective Fall 2024 Semester
• April 2 – Advanced Registration: Tentative date for Summer and Fall 2024 registration for graduate and undergraduate students (not including non-matrics). Check the Solar System for your enrollment appointment.
• April 10 – Graduation Application for Publication: Last day for students to apply for graduation and be included in the commencement publication. Students apply via SOLAR.
• May 3 – LOA/Term Withdrawal: Last day for undergraduate and graduate students to withdraw from the university. Withdrawing from the university must be processed through your Health Sciences school/program.
• May 3 – Graduation Application: Last day for Spring/Summer degree candidates to apply for graduation via SOLAR. Applications submitted after 4/10/24 will not appear in the Commencement Publication. Last day for removal of Incomplete (I) grades from Fall and Winter 2023/24 term.
