The University of Maryland was founded in 1856 as the Maryland Agricultural College and became a state land grant college in 1864. It was renamed Maryland State College in 1916 and then merged with the professional schools in Baltimore in 1920 to become the University of Maryland. Over time, the university expanded into a major public research university.
