A Historical Background of the University of Lagos (UNILAG)

UNILAG is a premier university in Nigeria and therefore knowing the history of this prestigious academic institution is very important. Why is it important you might ask? That to be candid is a very good question. Knowing a little about the school you want to study is very important because some questions might just be asked about the school during the screening period. So do well to get a little informed about the University of Lagos.

History has it that the institution founded in 1962 in Yaba, Lagos by an Act of the Federal Parliament. Before the establishment of the University of Lagos in 1962, a teachers’ training college, Trade Center, and Yaba College of Technology were the only institutions in the largest city in the country.  The Advisory Commission of the UNESCO presented a report calling for the establishment of the University in September 1960. After initial establishment in 1962 and three phases of building construction between 1962 and 1970, the university reached roughly its current size. The University of Lagos also known as UNILAG is now made up of nine faculties including Law, Education, Arts, Business Administration, Engineering, Environmental Science, Science, Social Science, and Pharmacy as well as a School of Medicine.

The University Of Lagos (UNILAG) Admission Requirements

The University o Lagos has laid down some admission requirements for candidates who are interested in study in the institution. These requirements must be meet if you must have admission.

Eligibility Criteria

  • You must possess a WAEC result with at least 5 credits passes at one sitting in subjects relevant to your course of study with Mathematics and English language forming the integral part of it.
  • Choose Unilag as first choice institution in your JAMB form.3.  You must have scored up to 200 in your JAMB exams at the time of application and be certain of your subject combinations which are in the JAMB brochure. Although JAMB has reduced the cut off for all universities and have pegged it firmly on 150 ,don’t get your mind fixated on that, strive up to the 200 to increase your chances. Need I remind you that you’re competition with over 50,000+ students for admission?  So JAMB reducing the cut off is not an endorsement to be officially lazy.
  • You must be up to age 16 at the time of application 5. You must participate in the post UTME exercise else there’s no admission whatsoever for you.

How to Apply for the Post UME

After you have gotten all it takes that has been listed above you can now do the following;

  • Go to the school’s website @ Unilag.edu.ng
  • Click on Admissions
  • Click on Post-UTME Application
  • Login with your JAMB registration number as username and surname inlowercase as password. This is to enable you recollect at ease.
  • Generate and print payment advice
  • Proceed to any commercial bank to make payment of N2,000 which is the screening fee. You can pay online too with your mobile banking app.or your visa ATM card.
  • Return to the University portal  (website) and  upload your passport photograph and  complete the application form
  • . Print Post-UTME confirmation slip and Examination Pass
  • Note down your own scheduled exams and start preparing in Ernest.
  • On the date of the exams, go with your print out in two colored copies
  • Write the post utme involving your best into it. After writing, you keep.yourself updated by visiting the site often to know when the result is out.
  • After checking your result keep your hopes and convictions alive as you await the admission list.

Requirements for Science and Engineering Students, candidates must make the following results;

  1. At least 5 Credits in Mathematics, English, Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Technical drawing (Engineering Students) either in WAEC (West African Examination Council) or NECO (National Examination Council) in not more than 2 sittings and can be combined, that is, WAEC and NECO but must not be more than 2 years apart.
  2. The candidate must make at least 200 pass mark in JAMB to qualify for internal screening by the University of Lagos.
