The University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW, UW-Madison, or simply Madison) is a public land-grant research university in Madison, Wisconsin. UW-Madison is the flagship campus of the University of Wisconsin System and the official state university of Wisconsin. It was established when Wisconsin became a state in 1848. It was the first public university of Wisconsin and is still the oldest and largest public university in the state. It was later designated as a land-grant institution in 1866.
The main campus is 933 acres (378 ha) and includes four National Historic Landmarks on the shores of Lake Mendota. The university also owns and operates the 1,200-acre (486 ha) Madison Arboretum, which is located 4 miles (6.4 km) south of the main campus.

Most classes are available during the 15-week Fall and Spring semesters, known as the A1 or Regular session.
